Mattia Binotto revealed at the launch of the new SF1000 that Sebastian Vettel et Charles Leclerc will start the 2020 campaign on an equal footing. 12 months earlier, the four-time world champion had been given priority “ in these certain cases » on the grounds of his great experience and his extensive track record.
His young Monegasque teammate wasted no time in shaking up the status quo to finish ahead of his illustrious garage neighbor in the Drivers' standings with 2 victories and 7 pole positions compared to only 1 success and 2 poles to the credit of Vettel.
« In one year, the situation has evolved, said Binotto. Charles now has a season of experience with us. Last year at this time, we declared Vettel our Number 1 driver, ahead of Charles. Both have proven that they have the means to fight for leading roles at the same level ».
This “laisser-faire” policy between pilots Ferrari already had a painful episode in Brazil last year when both men retired after stepping on each other's toes. Binotto assures that the Interlagos collision has been resolved internally, while Leclerc acknowledges that the Ferrari drivers will now take a safety margin when facing each other in close combat.
« We will exercise increased caution, confided the Monegasque, extended until 2024 as Vettel reaches the end of his contract this season. We learned the lesson from Brazil, but we have the right to fight on the track ».
Shall we talk about it again in the next skirmish?
