Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) set the benchmark time for the first practice session in 1’13”809. He was ahead of the championship leader Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) by almost two tenths. The two Finns on the board followed with Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) third, 0 seconds behind his teammate and Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) relegated to 237 tenths behind the Briton.
The two Force Indias of Sergio Perez andEsteban Ocon, despite a spin at the end of the session, were 5e and 6e in the second of the triple world champion. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was the first driver on super-soft tires in the ranking, one second from the lead ahead of Felipe Massa (Williams) Onee, Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) 9e and Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) which completed the top 10.
Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) ranked in 11e position in front Kevin Magnussen (Haas F1). Lance stroll (Williams) was 13e just in front of Romain Grosjean (Haas F1). Nico Hulkenberg was in difficulty with his Renault 14e. Fernando Alonso, held back by problems with his McLaren at the start of the session, was only able to complete a few laps before his Honda engine failed for his return to F1.
The Saubers of Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein flanked the Renault of Jolyon Palmer. Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) was forced to abandon his session after a few minutes following an engine problem.
The second practice session for the Canadian GP will be broadcast live this evening from 20:00 p.m. on Canal + Sport.
