EL1 – Verstappen ahead of the two Ferraris in Baku

As in Monaco, the drivers returned to the Baku circuit after the cancellation of the 2020 edition. And as in the Principality, it is Max Verstappen who seems most at ease within the walls of Baku. The Red-Bull driver, who has never been on the podium in Azerbaijan, is narrowly ahead of the two drivers Ferrari. Sergio Perez places the second Red-Bull in 4th position, almost half a second behind his teammate.

Ricciardo completes the top 5 with a solid performance which should restore his confidence. The first French pilot, Pierre Gasly, ranks in 6th place with his Alpha Tauri with a 1.43.757.
Mercedes was again discreet in this first session, not looking for pure performance. We thus find a Lewis Hamilton in 7th position while Bottas, stuck in Finland yesterday, only set the 10th time, 1 second 7 behind Verstappen's time. In great difficulty in Monaco, Alonso raises the bar and enters the top 10 with its Alpine shod with medium tyres.
A session which was marked by numerous yellow flags, particularly in the last minutes of these FP1. Yuki tsunoda was one of them, tapping the wall outside without consequence. Lewis Hamilton also suffered a scare at turn 15 where he went straight and blocked his right front tire. As for mazepin, he was surprised at turn 16, sending his Haas in Techpro.
Note the intervention of the VSC after 13 minutes of the session to clear debris in the middle of the track.
