The courageous spectators who braved the elements to attend the Saturday morning session did not have much to eat. After 45 of the 60 minutes of driving, alone Nico Hulkenberg had signed for a time with his Renault R.S.18. In the same sequence his teammate Carlos Sainz got a scare when he spun off at turn 10.
A slight lull at the end of the session encouraged the drivers to venture onto the track to explore conditions that they could well find during the qualifying session which will begin at 15:00 p.m.
Under this tricky weather, Leclerc emerged from the water at the very end of the session to stop the clock at 1'34"577, a time 0,423s faster than that of his neighbor in the Swedish garage. This is the first time in his young career that the former champion of Formula 2 dominates a free session on a Grand Prix weekend. Sergey Sirotkin (Williams) completes an improbable Top 3.
First of the traditional big arms, Sebastian Vettel hoist his Ferrari in 4th row, in front of the Toro Rosso-Honda Pierre Gasly et Brendon Hartley. Hülkenberg does not improve his initial mark and finally slips to 7th position. Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) and Lance stroll (Williams), are the only two other drivers to have set a time during these wet Free Practice 3.
The rain continues to fall in Hockenheim at the time of writing, which could bode well for very uncertain qualifying. You will be able to follow them in less than 2 hours live with commentary on CARhebdo.fr.
