In Portimao, Valtteri Bottas seems to like it and his times confirm it. After dominating the day on Friday, the Finn once again set the best time, this time during the third free practice session.
On the timesheet he overlooks, the pilot Mercedes displays a time of 1’16”654 only 26 thousandths ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Eighth in EL2 this Friday, the Englishman complained of some difficulties on the Algarve circuit but seems to have found the right settings a stone's throw from qualifying.
Friday host with his clash with Lance stroll (Racing Point) in EL, Max Verstappen (Red Bull) signed the third mark of the session. The Dutchman crossed the finish line just 158 thousandths behind Valtteri Bottas. A good omen before the battle for pole.
Affected by a fire on its car Friday, Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri), whose chassis was changed, started the day in a very good way. After a session where he rode a lot, the Frenchman climbed to 4th place ahead of Alexander albon (Red Bull) and a Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) in shape.
Renault for its part does not seem to have found the right set-up yet. Esteban Ocon et Daniel Ricciardo are far from the outposts. The first is 10th, just over a second behind Valtteri Bottas, while the second is only 14th, 1” from the lead.
Only 16th with his Racing Point, Lance Stroll will have to raise his voice this Saturday afternoon if he wants to do well in qualifying.
Complicated start to the weekend for Haas and especially Romain Grosjean. In difficulty, the Habs are last, more than 1 seconds behind the best time of the session.
