In Imola this Friday, it's Max Verstappen who emerged victorious from the qualifying duel against Charles Leclerc which determines the starting grid for the Sprint Race. In difficult conditions due in particular to the rain and the 5 red flags waved during the session, the Batavian gained the upper hand over the Monegasque with a lap in 1'27"999 compared to 1'28"778 for his rival.

The surprise perhaps comes from the 2e and 3e lines where are located Lando Norris (3e), Kevin Magnussen (4e), Fernando Alonso (5e) and Daniel Ricciardo (6e). Small disappointment in his qualifications for Sergio Pérez who settles for 7e time almost 2 seconds behind Max Verstappen. Hindered by the interruptions, the Mexican was never able to complete a clean lap to fight for the first positions.

Although he made a mistake in Q2, Carlos Sainz had managed to set a time on soft tires before the rain returned. He was thus able to take shelter and qualify for Q3. Logically absent from the latter, the Spaniard then secured 10e place on the rack.

New complicated qualifications for Mercedes. For the first time since the Japanese Grand Prix in 2012, no Silver Arrows appeared in Q3. George Russell finished 11e and first eliminated while Lewis Hamilton ranked in 13e position. Mick Schumacher came between the two teammates.

Disillusionment also in the French camp with the premature eliminations of Pierre Gasly andEsteban Ocon, respectively 17e and 19e. Alexander albon closes it works in 20e position.
