With the arrival of the new technical regulations, all cars are closely scrutinized every race weekend. It has indeed become commonplace to see teams introduce developments to continue to advance their car with the aim of getting closer to the top of the table. In Hungary, it is Aston Martin which grabbed all the attention with the AMR22's rear wing update.

From the first outing on the track de Sebastian Vettel et Lance stroll, eyes were fixed on the rear wing of their AMR22. Compared to the one seen at the French Grand Prix a week ago, it is true that the wing is very different. The engineers actually placed upper parts in the form of angles on the side fins of the fin, which immediately set the canvas on fire.

According to the official document sent by the FIA, Aston Martin explains that this updated wing is “ our wing generating the most aerodynamic downforce and which best adapts to the characteristics of the circuit. These additions increase the load on the rear wing."

Nothing really new since Aston Martin is only trying to adapt to the specificities of the Hungaroring where we want to have the most support on the rear wing. A configuration that we will not see again at Spa-Francorchamps or Monza for example where the characteristics of the tracks force the teams to disengage their rear wings to generate less aerodynamic downforce and drag to benefit from a better top speed.

Aston Martin plays with limits

With a radical change in the technical regulations, the FIA sought in particular to considerably reduce the aerodynamic disturbances caused by the rear wings in particular but also the numerous lateral drifts that we could see. Surprised by the new element of the Aston Martin AMR22, the Federation scrutinized it and it was deemed legal by the motorsport police.

The FIA even recognized an intelligent interpretation of the technical regulations for the 2022 season by Aston Martin and its engineers who seem to have found a loophole to exploit in them while remaining legal. Among the competition, this initiative was even welcomed even if we are not really in the good spirit of the recent decisions taken to reduce aerodynamic disturbances.

“If it is in accordance with the regulations, that is the main thing. I find that interesting. And if it turns out to be quick, maybe this time we'll be the ones to copy them! » even quipped Christian Horner, team principal Red Bull, at a press conference. It remains to be seen whether the 9 other teams will take the same direction as Aston Martin now or if the FIA will review the rules of the game to prevent this kind of episode from happening again since it goes against of the philosophy chosen for these new single-seaters.
