This April 21, 1985 will remain as a historic day in the history of the Formula 1. On the Portuguese circuit of Estoril, Ayrton Senna (Lotus) converted his first pole position into his first victory in difficult conditions.
The Brazilian, who had revealed himself to the whole world during a 1984 Monaco Grand Prix already contested in the rain, fully seized his chance while all his rivals drowned. His closest competitor, Michele Alboreto (Ferrari) will finish more than a minute behind, and everyone is at least one lap behind!
Only nine drivers saw the checkered flag, waved after two hours of effort and three laps before the 69 laps initially planned.
“The great danger was the permanent change in climatic conditions,” explained the winner. Sometimes the rain was intense, other times it was drizzle. I couldn't see anything in my mirrors. Even keep control of my car in a straight line was perilous, and the race should have been stopped earlier. It was much worse than Monaco last year. »
