Eric Broadley, the creator of Lola, has died

Eric Broadley, the founder of the Lola brand, has died at the age of 88. He started motorsport in the 1950s by building his first car, the Broadley Special, to compete in several championships in Great Britain, before creating the Mk1.

It was from the beginning of the 1960s that Eric Broadley set foot in F1 by creating the Lola Mk4 for the Yeoman Racing Team which will notably be driven by John Surtees (died March 10, 2017). The Lola brand will never win a Grand Prix, even if the 1964 world champion won pole at the 1962 Dutch GP at Zandvoort and two 2nd places the same year, at Aintree (Great Britain) and at the Nürburgring (Germany) . The third podium goes to the Aguri Suzuki title in Suzuka (Japan) on the Lola 90.

Lola distinguished herself even further in America, notably winning three victories at the Indy 500. The first was the title of Graham Hill who became the first Englishman to win the biggest American race at the wheel of a T90. Al Unser Sr will drink the milk reserved for the winner 12 years later with the T500. Éric Broadley would experience one last success in Indianapolis in 1990 with Arie Luyendyk.
