What if F1 returned to Africa soon?

Since 1993 and a victory ofAlain Prost at the South African Grand Prix with his Williams-Renault, F1 never put the wheels back on the African continent. While expansion towards Asia has never wavered, as evidenced by the upcoming arrival of Vietnam, Africa remains the poor relation of the premier category of motorsport.

The continent nevertheless hosts a good number of FIA championships such as the Formula E or the WTCR in Marrakech, while the legendary Kyalami track in South Africa will see the return of a major event next November with the 9 Hour race counting for the Intercontinental GT Challenge, promoted by SRO Motorsports.

A renewed activity which could be confirmed by a potential return of F1 in the years to come. In any case, this is the stated desire of several countries, including Morocco and South Africa, as mentioned by Sean Bratches, F1 commercial director at Liberty Media.

“We race on five continents and the last continent we don't race on is Africa, recalls Bratches, quoted by Press Association during the Sport Industry Breakfast Club in London. Morocco and Marrakech proactively contacted us to organize a grand prix there. There is great interest.

Formula 1 has raced in South Africa before – there is a historic track at Kyalami – but I was told that for political reasons it stopped. We are looking to organize a race there in the short term. It is very important for us to have a race in Africa. »

F1 has also just announced a return to the Zandvoort route in the Netherlands, providing a new opportunity for fans of Max Verstappen to admire their idol.
