What if Nyck De Vries was the key to the transfer market?

By winning the very first FE World Champion title with Mercedes, will the Dutchman open the doors to F1? If so, his promotion will go through the firm to the Star… to replace George Russell at Williams.

What if Nyck De Vries was the key to the transfer market?

He will not have had the meteoric career that was predicted for him at the start of the 2010 decade when his excellent results in karting had earned him a place of choice in the young pilot program of McLaren. f.Renault 2.0 & 3.5, GP2, he will have to wait for his 3season of Formula 2 in 2019 to give his career car the impetus he needed. But isn't it already too late? This somewhat laborious conquest of the F2 title did not resolve all the questions. It is quite different for the world crown freshly acquired in Formula E which allows Mercedes to announce his next departure from the discipline on the highest note. Now, the other side of the coin, can the Stuttgart firm really let down its young world champion?

For her who wonders about the need to leave her protégé George Russell with Williams or to repatriate him to Brackley in the official stable, will the new situation created by the world title of this other protégé of the Star not be the trigger? De Vries, despite his 26 years, would make a credible replacement for Russell in the British team since it is hardly conceivable to imagine a pair stamped 100% Mercedes under the skies of Grove. Also, Jost Capito, general director of the famous structure, has no reason to do without the services – and capital – of Nicholas Lafiti who opened his score in F1 during the last Hungarian GP. So, whether we look at the problem in all directions, the De Vries option is necessarily on the table for Toto wolff. Is she strong enough to persuade the Austrian manager that the time has come to part ways with Valtteri Bottas ? Nothing is less sure. If this were to be the case, however, the big beneficiary of Mercedes' internal movements would undoubtedly be the general director of Sauber, Frédéric Vasseur, since from then on, Alfa Romeo would become the Finn's preferred destination to continue his adventure in F1.
