F1 2014 – With Russia, Mexico and Austria?

Bernie Ecclestone constantly harps on his desire to increase the number of Grands Prix. Could the Briton be achieving this? Still, the provisional calendar for the 2014 season of Formula 1 presented to the teams this morning reveals 21 rounds.

The season should, like this year, open in Australia (March 16), and conclude in Brazil (November 30). As expected, the New Jersey Grand Prix, with New York as a backdrop, is still in the realm of dreams. But not the Austrian, Russian and Mexican stages.

The presence of Red Bull Ring is no surprise, since it is the Dietrich Mateschitz firm itself which announced it at the end of July. The passage through the city of Sochi (Russia) has been known for a long time, and the presence of a stage in Mexico is not surprising as this country is omnipresent in the premier discipline of motorsport. AUTOhebdo spoke to you about it at the beginning of May (see AH n°1908), via these comments: “With Esteban Gutiérrez and Sergio Pérez on the 2013 starting grid, the ‘spicy’ country aims to enrich the Formula 1 calendar, starting in 2014.” Mission accomplished ! As a reminder, the last visit of Formula 1 to Mexico dates back to March 22, 1992. The victory was to the credit of Nigel Mansell, who then defended the colors of Williams-Renault.

It remains for the FIA to validate all this…
