F1: Grosjean has the last word at Mugello

Romain Grosjean (Lotus) achieved the best time in practice with a time of 1'21"035 achieved at the start of the session. The Frenchman was however one of the least diligent on the track today since, for comparison, Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), the closest to the E20, fails by two tenths with 106 laps covered. Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) tested a new exhaust configuration today and finished the session credited with third time. But the Asturian cost his team time by hitting a wall of tires and damaging his front wing. If the F2012 was absent from the track for several hours, the double world champion still completed 98 laps. Daniel Ricciardo (Toro Rosso) is the last one less than a second behind the Frenchman, five tenths behind.

Sergio Perez (Sauber) is more than a second away. Even though he was able to complete 118 laps of the Italian circuit, the Mexican had several problems including the start of a fire which broke out on his C31 at the start of the session when he was leaving the pits. The driver of the Swiss team did not lose too much time and finished just ahead Nico Hulkenberg who shared the wheel with Paul di Resta (Force India). The 2010 champion saw his session cut short when he left the track. Williams was the least diligent on the track with only 63 laps covered for Pastor Maldonado. The Venezuelan missed most of the day after encountering an electrical problem on his FW34 but was still able to set the seventh fastest time at the end of the session ahead of Nico Rosberg (Mercedes). The most diligent of the day was Heikki Kovalainen (Caterham) who was able to complete 139 laps despite going off the track. The Finn, however, finished the day in penultimate place, more than two seconds behind the Frenchman's E20.
