F1: new points system?

While the points allocation system in F1 was modified in early December 2009 by the FIA World Council, a further modification could take place. This week, AUTOhebdo told you that the F1 Commission was brought forward to February 1, instead of March 14, to address this subject. Some teams would like to introduce bonus points for pole position and the fastest lap in the race.

According to the German press, the distribution of points in the race would also be subject to discussion. Following the validation of the new points scale, many voices were raised, arguing that the proportion of points is exactly the same as before. Indeed, the number of points has increased for the first three in a race (25 against 10, 20 against 8, 15 against 6) but in the same proportions: the old figure has been multiplied by 2,5 and the " “Victory bonus” is therefore only illusory.

The F1 Commission could therefore correct this relative error, and give greater importance to victory. Auto Motor und Sport thus speaks of an adjustment intended to widen a gap of seven points between first and second in a Grand Prix. Instead of the 25-20-15-10-8-6-5-3-2-1 put in place in December, the new system could only offer 18 points to the second. The next F1 Commission should therefore rule on this subject, which could be important at the end of the season for the designation of the next Formula 1 world champion.
