Fernando Alonso was present yesterday at the trackside and in the Barcelona paddock to visit his former team F1 Mclaren racing. A visit which undoubtedly hid the formalization of this Wednesday, namely the new role of ambassador of the double F1 world champion within Woking.
The Spaniard, who will remain involved with McLaren in 2019 with a racing program focused on the Indianapolis 500, will notably have the role of advising the drivers and engineers.
Another attribution for the former pilot Ferrari, and undoubtedly the one which will be the most scrutinized: Alonso will participate in the development of the MCL34 of 2019 and the MCL35 of 2020 through certain driving sessions.
“Before I stopped racing in Formula 1 last year, I saw myself being involved with McLaren for a very long time, recalls Alonso. So I’m excited about this new role and the ability to stay closely associated with the team that I feel is my spiritual home.
We of course have the Indianapolis 500 in May, which I'm looking forward to, but it's just the beginning of many things we can do together.
I am particularly passionate about developing young drivers, whether with my own team or helping the new generation of F1 drivers at McLaren unlock their true potential.
This is important to both me and the team, so it will be a particularly rewarding part of my role. »
Alonso joins another F1 world champion, Mika Häkkinen, in the role of McLaren ambassador.
