Fernando Alonso (Ferrari), for several weeks, has been convinced: he will win his third World Champion title in his first season with Ferrari. The Spaniard, this weekend, in any case, provided the essentials, two weeks after losing big points at Spa-Francorchamps. Getting off to a bad start, he nevertheless had to hand over control of the race to Jenson Button (McLaren) during the first hour. Still in the tailpipes of the Briton, the native of Oviedo took advantage of his rival's stop to set two excellent lap times before himself putting on soft tires. Coming out in front of the McLaren driver, Fernando Alonso then let go of the horses to pick up his third victory of the season, after Bahrain and Hockenheim, by setting laps each faster than the other.
The Spaniard, after winning with Ferrari for his first race in Red, after having offered pole for the Italian GP to Ferrari, allows the Scuderia to triumph at the end of a perfect weekend. Now back in the title race, the native of Asturias however has points to make up. Indeed, despite abandoning after breaking his direction while trying to overtake the Ferraris on the first lap, Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) remains second in the driver standings. He is now five lengths behind Mark Webber (Red Bukll), who takes back control of the World Championship, thanks to eight points for sixth place.
Jenson Button (McLaren), second at Monza, and Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), fourth after attempting a formidable poker move by changing tires at the start of the last lap, are also back in the title race.
