Ferrari confirms appeal against Racing Point

This is an important new development in the saga that has been poisoning the paddock for weeks. Ferrari has confirmed its intention to appeal against the stewards' decision in the Racing Point brake duct case.

The commissioners came to the conclusion that the drawings of RP 20 had been designed by Mercedes and not the Silverstone team, as required by appendix 6 of the sporting regulations which lists the Listed Parts. However, Racing Point was only sanctioned for a sporting and non-technical infraction.

Consequently, the former Force India structure suffered a fined 400 euros and lost 000 points at the Styrian Grand Prix (7,5 units per car) but can still use the parts originally challenged by Renault via a series of complaints, the first dating back to July 12.

Racing Point in fact only took reprimands in Budapest, then during the two rounds organized at Silverstone, for having driven with the same scoops as in Austria.

The sanction was considered too lenient by his rivals, of which 4 initially notified their intention to appeal: Renault, McLaren, Williams, and Ferrari. Racing Point also chose to enter the battle, for diametrically opposed reasons naturally.

Lawrence Stroll, CEO of the team which will become Aston Martin in 2021, came out of its usual media silence last weekend by castigating what he considers to be a lack of fair play Racing Point competitors.

The teams had 96 hours to confirm their call: it is now done for Ferrari. Other stakeholders have until 09:30 a.m. (UK time) tomorrow morning to comment, but further statements are expected in the evening.

The saga is far from over.
