Ferrari won't give up on 2025 despite being behind McLaren

The question has been asked since the beginning of the year. When should development for 2025 be halted and the team move on to next season? For Ferrari, one seems to be a viable option. The Scuderia clearly has no plans to let go for the current season.

Unanimously, expectations were high for the performance of Ferrari. Without even putting the aspect of the colossal investments made until now in the foreground, the formation of a team composed of managers such as Loïc Serra and Jérôme D'Ambrosio as well as a pilot like Lewis Hamilton in the car seemed to herald a very short-term battle for the two world titles.

Once the Tifosi's disappointment with the irrelevant performance has passed, the Scuderia is in for a bit of reflection. Since the first laps in Melbourne, but especially after the double disqualification in Shanghai, the teams seem to be busy working on the new developments planned to improve the floor, the diffuser area, as well as many elements related to the SF-25's temperamental rear axle in particular.

According to The Race, Ferrari's chassis technical director, Loïc Serra, has maintained the condition of the car currently in active development. In other words, new major parts should arrive throughout the summer to be gradually fitted to the car. The primary objective is to improve its handling. In this way, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc could push their relays further, particularly in qualifying. This would allow them to finally extract the full potential of their vehicle, which, according to Frédéric Vasseur, is still largely exploitable.

Ferrari on deck for the present and the future

Although the decision was made not to stop developing the SF-25 in order to compete McLaren By the end of the season, Ferrari has not forgotten its priorities. Charles Leclerc spoke on the subject after the Jeddah Grand Prix, which was his first podium of the season.

"I think one can go with the other. We often say 'let's move straight to next year's car.' That kind of thing, with the new structures of the F1, can increasingly go hand in hand, he explained. I don't think you can be extreme in one direction or the other."

Reasonable and cautious, the Monegasque asserts that his team wants to keep each of its ambitions intact, thus refusing to resign itself to losing, on any level whatsoever. "This does not mean that we are only focusing on this season, forgetting about next season or vice versa, he developed. I think we're trying to get the best of both worlds and see where that takes us. As soon as the chances of winning the championship this year are no longer possible, it will probably make sense to focus on 2026."

In the medium term, new aerodynamic developments are expected to appear on the Scuderia's single-seater at the Imola Grand Prix. Several structural improvements are expected afterward. In the meantime, the resource-sharing strategy is being adopted at Maranello. Will the Italians' greed pay off, or will it lead them to sin through hubris? Part of the answer will likely be known in the final third of this year.

This championship is lost anyway; the delay is now too great. If Ferrari can develop the SF25 in parallel while preparing for 2026, so much the better, but I would bet that if the results don't improve after Imola, the decision will be made to abandon 2025.

My prediction was right, improvements will take place and that's normal. Ferrari is an extraordinary brand. 😎👍
