Ferrari leads EL2 in Malaysia, Grosjean trapped by curb

The second practice session ended a quarter of an hour from the checkered flag following a strange accident. Romain Grosjean (Haas), 17th in the session, saw his right rear tire explode following passing a curb at turn 13 where a plate came off. The former GP17 champion's Haas VF2 suffered significant damage when it hit the tire wall, but the Frenchman was unhurt.

The commissioners had to display the red flag, the repairs to be carried out being too extensive. This premature termination prevented the teams from completing their race simulation program.

La Team Ferrari achieved the best times with a reference time of 1'31''261 achieved by Sebastian Vettel who was six tenths ahead of his teammate Kimi Räikkönen. The SF70Hs beat the Red Bull de Daniel Ricciardo et Max Verstappen, While Fernando Alonso (McLaren) stood out by completing the top five ahead of the Mercedes de Lewis Hamilton et Valtteri Bottas. The W08s seemed to be in difficulty since the two drivers of the star-studded team made a mistake while going into the gravel trap. The Finn notably had to wait in the pits while his mechanics repaired the flat bottom of his car.

Nico Hulkenberg placed the first Renault in ninth place, finishing between the Force India of Sergio Pérez and Esteban Ocon. Jolyon Palmer (Renault) follows in 11th place ahead of Felipe Massa (Williams), Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) and Lance stroll (Williams).

Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso) distinguished himself once again by setting the 13th time and beating his teammate by less than a tenth Carlos Sainz Jr despite a concern at the start of the session when his STR12 released thick smoke in the pits. Kevin Magnussen (Haas) beat the Saubers of Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson.

The third practice session for the Malaysian GP will be contested from 8 a.m. French time and broadcast live on Canal+ Sport.
