Ferrari plays it safe with its engines in Shanghai

Author of a remarkable weekend in the Sakhir desert, Leclerc was on his way to the first victory of his young career when one of the six cylinders of his engine stopped working. There Team had revealed the cause of the problem a few days later, after identifying a short circuit in a control box of the injection system.

« The problem only appeared once, during the race in Bahrain, declared Mattia Binotto, Ferrari team principal, from Shanghai where the F1 is stopping off this weekend for its 1000th Grand Prix. We must perform well in reliability as well as quality control.

We changed all our systems for China as a precaution, including on Sebastian's car which had no problems, while we fully understood the problem. ».

The Haas with a Ferrari engine Romain Grosjean et Kevin Magnussen also received new electronic controls, but not the Alfa Romeo by Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi, also powered by hybrid V6s from the Maranello workshops.

If the electronic control changes are not yet synonymous with withdrawals of 10 places on the starting grid, drivers are only allowed two copies of the element in question throughout the entire season. After inspection of the parts used in Bahrain, they may however be used again if Ferrari deems them suitable for use.
