Since the start of the season, Ferrari had managed to get through the drops by avoiding reliability problems. But since a few races and the introduction of second power units on all single-seaters powered by the Scuderia (Ferrari, Alfa Romeo et Haas), the calm ended at Maranello. The first alert came in Miami with the abandonment of Guanyu-Zhou. Two weeks later, Charles Leclerc had to give up a victory that was reaching out to him as the Chinese Alfa Romeo driver suffered his second premature Grand Prix end. More recently, it's Haas and Kévin Magnussen who paid the price for the lack of reliability in racing.

However, these new problems do not seem to worry Mattia Binotto, the team principal of Scuderia Ferrari, that much. “ Reliability is always a challenge, especially for a power unit, announces the Italian engineer. You're always trying to chase better performance, increase performance, but then ensure and guarantee reliability, it's never easy. »

Line abandonments for Ferrari engines

Aware of the challenges posed by this search for performance, the Scuderia knew that by taking a step forward, new problems would arise. “ The start of the season was excellent, we had some problems during the last races with Charles as well as with our client teams in Monaco, says Mattia Binotto. Our engine department has done an incredible job from last year to this season in terms of improving performance, and that has certainly affected us, or at least put reliability at risk. »

« There are concerns, but I know our team is very strong and we are trying to ensure reliability for the next races », Explains the Ferrari manager. It remains to be seen whether the single-seaters powered by the Scuderia will once again experience reliability problems in Azerbaijan. During FP1, Haas experienced the first breakdown of the weekend. The porpoising caused by the Azeri route caused a water leak on Mick Schumacher's VF-22.
