FIA: “The approach of young drivers must be done gradually”

Since this year and thanks to Liberty Media, the FIA offers young pilots the opportunity to follow a career directed by karting to the F1 with the passage under their jurisdiction of the GP2 Series, which became FIA F2.

« We must also ensure that in terms of performance, the approach of young people in car is done gradually: F4, F3, F2 then F1. , explains Stefano Domenicali, in charge of the FIA single-seater commission. There are a lot of things they need to learn about cars. »

With this category scale, the FIA wants to avoid too brutal transitions of young drivers to F1, as was the case for Max Verstappen et Lance stroll, both coming directly from European F3.

« The first championship (F4) was held in Italy in 2014. Today, we have nearly 240 drivers, 12 championships, 6 manufacturers, 4 chassis manufacturers, 80 races. This proves to us that we are offering the right project for the future. »

The project established by the FIA has become essential for all drivers if they wish to access F1. The rebirth of the FIA F2 marks the completion of this project even if a merger between the GP3 Series and the FIA F3 European Championship is being developed for the coming years.
