Nico Hulkenberg was strongly expected to replace Adrian Sutil as a starter at Force India in 2012. The German had distinguished himself at Williams in 2010 by taking pole at the Brazilian GP. After scoring 22 points and ending the season in 14th place, the Grove team preferred to start Pastor Maldonado who provided significant financial support. Nico Hülkenberg then found refuge at Force India by occupying the position of reserve driver in 2011. He finally won the starting place after having shown patience and will evolve alongside Paul di Resta, who will also have a season of experience in F1.
“With Paul and Nico we will have two extremely talented drivers with immense potential”, comments Dr Vijay Mallya. “We believed in Nico's potential since the end of the 2010 season and we decided to evaluate him this year. Despite limited time in the car, he was able to convince us that he deserved a steering wheel in 2012. As for Paul, he was able to attract attention from the paddock in his rookie season. His speed and maturity confirmed that we were right to believe in him and we look forward to working with him again next year. This means that we say goodbye to Adrian Sutil, who was with us since our beginnings. He has been part of our success over the past four seasons and we wish him the best for the future. »
