Franz Tost would like fewer GPs in Europe

While a majority of the paddock is worried about the future of the discipline in Europe, theannouncement of the return of the French Grand Prix in 2018 was favorably received by those involved in the F1.

Franz Tost, Team Principal of Toro Rosso, nevertheless gave a different opinion by wishing to see F1 exported more to other continents while Europe still hosts seven events out of the 20 on the 2017 calendar.

“I know I have a different opinion from my colleagues, but we should go to South Africa, we should have more races in the USA, we should go to Argentina and India which is a very important market”, he told the Tiroler Tageszeitung.

“F1 is a global sport. We had half a million viewers following our races live in 2015. These numbers are only matched by the Football World Cup and the Olympic Games, but we ride every two weeks. So the product is good, but something needs to be done”, argued Franz Tost.

The Toro Rosso Team Principal is nevertheless aware that the attractiveness of F1 also depends on the competitiveness between the teams.

" I hope that Red Bull et Ferrari will return to the game. Otherwise, many people will stop following the races. Races need to be more exciting, recognized Franz Tost. Spectators want different winners. They want to see accidents, not injuries but contacts. I always heard my friends say that they were used to collisions at the start. »

“Pilots should have more freedoms, we don’t need rules, underlined Franz Tost. There is always a risk of damaging your car when competing against a competitor in F1. Let the drivers race. When they fail, they fail. It's part of the game and the show. »
