Gasly learned of his commitment at the last minute

Pierre Gasly is preparing to compete in his first Grand Prix in F1 by replacing Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso. The resident of the Red Bull Junior Team currently fighting for the Super Formula title with Team Mugen after winning the GP2 Series crown saw the support of the Red Bull strengthen as Carlos Sainz Jr prepares to join Renault Sport F1 Team in 2018.

“I knew things were happening with Red Bull without knowing exactly what, explained Pierre Gasly at a press conference in the paddock of the Malaysian GP. I left Japan this Monday after competing in the Sugo Super Formula event. I arrived in Malaysia and it was only there that I received a message telling me that I might be able to ride this weekend. I had trouble falling asleep but received confirmation the next day. It was an incredible moment and fantastic news. »

Red Bull has for the moment confirmed the presence of Pierre Gasly at the next two Grands Prix, in Malaysia and Japan, without giving further details on the rest of the program for the Frenchman.

“I’m not sure at the moment what will happen in the next two weeks. I focus on my weekend trying to do my best and learning as much as possible, added Pierre Gasly. It’s a chance to be able to ride alongside Carlos (Sainz Jr) who is at his best level currently. This is a good reference for me. »

Pierre Gasly also had a word for the usual Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat who was sidelined for the next events.

“I didn’t get a chance to talk to Kvyat. Unfortunately, that's how sports work. He was in my position before arriving in F1, he waited to get his chance and he had to take someone else's place. I am obviously sorry for him, he is a very good driver who is talented. I think we'll see him on the grids again at some point. »

Pierre Gasly will wear the No. 10 in the Toro Rosso STR12.
