Gasly: “Imola, one of my favorite circuits”

On the Enzo e Dino circuit Ferrari from Imola (Italy), Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) intends to launch its 2021 season in earnest Formula 1. French, caught in a collision on the first lap in Bahrain with Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) will seek to open his points counter on a route that suited him in 2020.

Indeed, the Norman had set a nice fourth time in qualifying with his Toro Rosso, before give up without being able to try your luck in the race, due to a mechanical problem. “Imola is one of my favorite circuits. I love it. It's a technical place with lots of fast corners that allow you to get into a rhythm where you're always busy behind the wheel, it's quite twisty.

Last year, on this track, I got my best qualification with the team, on the second row. Unfortunately this race ended early with a problem when I was fifth, but it was a very good weekend so far. Now I can't wait to come back and make up for last year's disappointment. »

Pierre Gasly also learned positive lessons from the first round of the 2021 season. “In all the free practice sessions in Sakhir, we were among the first and a fifth time in qualifying was one of our best results to date. Overall, in terms of performance and speed, it's very encouraging for the rest of the season, explains the 25-year-old pilot.

It looks like we have a package that will allow us to challenge for big points and there is no reason why that won't be the case for the races to come. An example of the team's confidence was the decision to tackle Q2 in Sakhir on the Medium tire because apart from us, only the two Mercedes et Max Verstappen (Red Bull) did it.

It was a risk, but it shows our confidence in our car and our level of performance. I hope now we can do it again at other circuits. »
