For Gasly, it will be “important to qualify well in Miami” before Barcelona and Monaco

Pierre Gasly's start to the season is tumultuous to say the least, with up-and-down performances @Joao Filipe / DPPI

After four Grands Prix and only six points on the clock, the Frenchman is probably not having the start to the season that he would have imagined. Yet very comfortable in qualifying in recent years, the pilot Alpha Tauri has not yet seemed to find his rhythm this season behind the wheel of his new car. And in fact, there's nothing like a classic racing weekend to allow Pierre Gasly to find his bearings, in Miami moreover, after the upheaval of the sprint race weekend in Emilia-Romagna (only one free practice session before qualifying on Friday).

Prepare for Barcelona and Monaco this weekend

“Although it is important to qualify well in Miami, I think it should be possible to double up there. But there are races like Imola, Spain and Monaco, where qualifying is much more important and the key is to have a good Saturday. »

Without doubt the factor that the French lack the most currently. Since the start of the season, he has not exceeded the threshold of ninth place in qualifying – in Jeddah. He even found himself trapped in Q1, during the last meeting in Emilia-Romagna, what's more, a few kilometers from his team's base camp. Add to that, the performances of his teammate, Yuki tsunoda, seventh at the checkered flag. A weekend to forget.

“It was clear that the car was working well, as Yuki demonstrated with a good result. There is clearly some potential in the car, and we can hope to have some good races. But that won't happen if we don't have a good weekend, qualifying well and starting as close to the start of the grid as possible. »

Back two weeks later for the Miami Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly will be keen to show something else, he who seems to appreciate and be at ease on more urban circuits – he scored his last podium in Baku last year pass.

“I drove Miami on the simulator. I think I've done about 130 laps and it looks like it's a really fun circuit to drive with high speed corners and very slow, technical sections with long straights, so I think it could be a big one race. »

That's the whole point of this new Grand Prix in Florida. Nearly 240 fans are expected throughout the weekend, and the show should be there. At least that's what everyone hopes.
