Gasly: “I feel good energy” at Toro Rosso

Pierre Gasly enters his third Grand Prix of the 2019 season Formula 1 within the team Toro Rosso. The Frenchman, ninth in Belgium and 11th in Italy, appreciates the night meeting in Singapore.

“It’s one of my favorite circuits. This is the track with the most turns of the season (23), recalls the Rouennais. The driver has a big influence on performance, he can make more of a difference.

It's a big challenge to give the best of yourself, with these extreme conditions, (which are) heat and length. It is the longest race of the year with two hours of effort. In addition, brushing against walls and ideally passing within a millimeter requires a lot of energy. This is clearly an area where if the physical preparation is not adapted, there will be effects on performance. »

Replaced by Alexander Albon during the summer break at Red Bull, Pierre Gasly found an environment he knows better, having spent the end of the 2017 season and the entire 2018 campaign there. “I find more or less the same people in the team, I would say around 70%, whether mechanics, engineers, communications or marketing. I found the atmosphere of last season, which is very good. I feel good energy, I feel good.

Now I have to focus on performance with my engineer (the Frenchman Pierre Hamelin. Editor’s note). I've only done two races, but I'm already happy with the direction we've taken. What is certain is that I have the feeling of riding in a more natural way, he analyzes.

We were able to make changes with my engineer to adapt to what I wanted. So far, it's working pretty well for me. We manage to perform well but I think there will be more performance that will come when we work even more with the team. »

Everything is better for the 2016 GP2 Series champion, who details the differences between the Red Bull and the Toro Rosso. « I was surprised how much an F1 car can change in terms of sensations. We don't realize it but it goes through a lot of things.

The position in the cockpit, the space you have behind the wheel, the vision, the hardness of the brake and accelerator pedal, the assistance, the turning radius too. For example, when you put a 45 degree angle on the steering wheel, the two cars will turn differently. »

Pierre Gasly's objective at the end of the 2019 financial year will be to “perform” and score points for Christian Horner and Helmut Marko. “The second seat at Red Bull is open. Today, the most important thing for me is to concentrate race after race.

I don't think about next year because a lot can happen. I am focusing on what I can change and influence now at Toro Rosso. I'm under contract with Red Bull for a few more years. »
