What a comeback from Mercedes and George Russell! After a poor start to the season, the Silver Arrows made their mark at the Spanish Grand Prix. Starting in 4th position, George Russell quickly took advantage of the missed start of Carlos Sainz to stand behind Max Verstappen et Charles Leclerc. After the exit at turn number 4 of the Batavian, the Briton found himself temporary runner-up to the Monegasque. As Verstappen caught up, he was expected to quickly clear the Mercedes. George Russell was not of this opinion and the two drivers engaged in a great battle which punctuated the Grand Prix.

So, is Mercedes finally back on top? “ I would like to say it but today was very hard. I gave everything I could to hold Max, he did an incredible job. I'm proud to be able to be here (on the podium. Editor's note), the guys have worked so hard thank you to them and thank you to the engine department at Brixworth », enthused George Russell after the race.

« I had the Red Bull in my mirrors, I did everything possible to keep them behind me. It was enjoyable laps and I'm happy to take 3rd place home with lots of points for us. Congratulations to Max, he did a very good job. »

A complex end of the race

At the end of the Grand Prix, the German team's single-seaters had difficulties with the Catalan heat and Lewis Hamilton was forced to slow down, finishing 5th. George Russell was not spared. “ It was very difficult. In the final laps it was a race for survival. But we knew we had enough of a gap and I'm proud to bring home 3rd place. Thanks to all the fans, they were amazing all weekend. The support in Formula 1 at the moment is very positive, it's great to be here at the moment.» With this podium, George Russell occupies 4th place in the Drivers' standings before the Monaco Grand Prix next weekend where Mercedes should once again perform well.
