The story of George Russell is one of obviousness. A slow and planned accession. It is the story of an announced succession, and of a prince who is already beginning to overshadow the king Lewis Hamilton. This is the story of George Russell, son of Tydd St Giles and Cambridgeshire, whose recent performances make him a legitimate contender for the world crown for years to come. Since his arrival in F1 in Williams in 2019, the progression of the young English driver is linear and without any hitches. At 25, the boy who was British F4 champion (2014), F3 (2017) and F2 (2018) in another life, has come of age. He has become one of the sure values on the grid, and a probable potential world champion.
By integrating him into their junior stable in 2017, Mercedes et Toto wolff wanted to anticipate the post-Lewis Hamilton era by leaving it to George to prepare. For three years, he learned the ropes and was relatively shielded from the media spotlight, with a few exceptions.
In 2019, he inflicted a 21-0 in qualifying on his teammate Robert Kubica. In 2020, he scored decisive points thanks to his sparkling freelancing behind the wheel of a Mercedes. Hamilton having contracted Covid-19 in the wake of the Bahrain GP, Russell donned the luxury joker costume the following weekend for the Sakhir GP.
