Gianpiero Lambiase at McLaren: “The icing on the cake” for Andrea Stella

For Andrea Stella, Gianpiero Lambiase's arrival is not a dramatic turn of events but rather part of a long-term strategic plan. The director of McLaren This appointment should be placed in the context of the team's growth in recent years: the number of members has increased by more than 20% in three years, the ever-increasing workload is impacting the working conditions of key members, and the structure has reached a size that necessitates a clearer distribution of responsibilities at the top. It is within this context that the position of competition director takes on its full meaning—a role that Stella currently combines with that of team director, and which he himself acknowledges he can no longer sustainably manage alone.

Stella sees this arrival as a strong sign of McLaren's renewed attractiveness: “Gianpiero’s arrival will bring the team great expertise and considerable long-term potential. It is also further proof of McLaren’s appeal to the best talent in the world.” Formula 1 » He attributes this renewed appeal to the team culture patiently built up in recent years, as much as to the results obtained on the track: "This credibility we have earned is the result of the hard work of all the men and women who have worked at McLaren in recent years to create a culture that allows everyone to thrive and contribute to the common goal, in a healthy and pleasant environment."

Stella is explicit about the precise role Lambiase will play within the structure: “Gianpiero’s arrival is the icing on the cake of a project that, from the outset, had all the necessary ingredients. For me, he will be an essential support, occupying the position of competition director, a role I currently hold in addition to my role as team director.” A distribution of tasks designed to lighten the load on the top of the hierarchy, in a Formula 1 where the size of the teams and the density of the calendar have profoundly transformed the job of team principal compared to what it was twenty years ago.

The rumors about his own future make him smile

The announcement of Lambiase's arrival immediately fueled speculation about Stella's own future with the team. Some rumors suggested astronomical salaries and pre-contracts with other teams. The Italian director dismissed them with deliberate irony: “Honestly, some recent rumors, especially those concerning astronomical salaries and mythical pre-contracts, made me smile. It almost seems like the ‘rumor season,’ which usually starts before the summer, has arrived early!” A light tone that contrasts with the seriousness that some media outlets had attributed to the situation.

Stella takes the culinary metaphor — echoing her comparison to the cake — to its logical conclusion: "It almost looks like an envious pastry chef tried to sabotage the preparation of a good dessert at McLaren's Bakery. But we know very well how to tell the difference between good ingredients and poisoned biscuits." An unambiguous message: far from feeling threatened by Lambiase's arrival, Stella presents it as a decision that he himself helped to build alongside Zak Brown, in a logic of continuity and long-term solidity for the Woking team.

Well said, Yves-Henri, Zak Brown's no fool! Remember the year he founded his own team and won the title... you don't have to be an idiot to achieve things like that :):):)

Given Andrea Stella's age (55), it's also reasonable to assume that Zak Brown is completing his top management succession plan (logical for a large company), especially since the press is reporting...alpine - who likes to dream! - gladly sends the Italian STELLA to Maranello to replace Frédéric VASSEUR!
