Gilles Villeneuve disappeared 35 years ago

Qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder in 1982 will forever be remembered as one of the most tragic moments in racing history. F1 with the fatal accident of Gilles Villeneuve.

The 32-year-old Canadian had driven for Scuderia Ferrari since the end of the 1977 season after competing in the British Grand Prix with McLaren, and had signed all of his six victories with the single-seaters of Maranello, including successes on his land in Montreal in 1978 (the circuit today bears his name) and in the streets of the Principality of Monaco in 1981.

Vice-world champion in 1979, Gilles Villeneuve, however, will never win the world crown. His offensive driving style remains in everyone's memory, notably the famous duel with the Renault de Rene Arnoux at the French Grand Prix in Dijon in 1979.

His son, Jacques, was crowned world champion in 1997 with Williams-Renault, after also winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1995.
