The proposal was raised at the last Commission F1 and seemed to convince the majority of F1 teams. It is now official: from the next Monaco Grand Prix (May 25), drivers will have to make at least two pit stops, regardless of the weather conditions. The FIA World Motor Sport Council ratified this new measure on Wednesday, citing a desire to boost the spectacle on the track at an event where overtaking is not common, especially since the current technical regulations have led to a significant increase in the size of single-seaters.
It is now mandatory for teams to use three sets of tires with at least two different compounds if it is a dry race. This means that they will not have to use all three types of rubber, as was once the case. This new decision has already convinced the local rider, Charles Leclerc.
Charles Leclerc convinced, but…
"Strategy is going to become a little bit more important, I think that's a good thing," assures the winner of the 2024 Monaco GP to Motorsport Week. “Monaco is super exciting on Saturday, for us drivers it’s incredible, it’s the best qualifying of the year. Then on Sunday it can get a little bit… not much happens. So I think it’s a way to add a little bit of spice.”
The Monegasque, however, is asking the FIA to show flexibility if this change does not prove conclusive. During its meeting, the Federation also adopted several other measures, including the extension of ABB's contract as supplier of the chargers of the Formula E for the future GEN4, which will run from 2026 to 2030. The next meeting of the World Motor Sport Council will take place on June 10 in Macau.

Regrets from the 60s-70s and early 80s. 4 tires, full tank. Signage and no radio. And off we go for the entire race.

I am against any mandatory pit stops. We are moving towards a sporting spectacle. Finally, overtaking in the pits is not a very nice spectacle. When will we have random banana skins? Or x pit stops, with x number of swear words spoken for each driver. The remedies are known: significantly less aerodynamics, less bulky cars, no carbon brakes...

Or how to artificially try to make a race soporific, more exciting and it's not a given. We would have to multiply the qualifications and determine the ranking based on the cumulative number of places.

I already think that pit stops have no place in a single-seater race (it's not endurance racing), if it's for an unfortunate mechanic to decide the name of the winner, it would be a great shame for the image of this legendary GP even if it can sometimes be boring for the uninitiated.
