GP France – Renault surprised by McLaren

The Renault maintained a good pace in qualifying for the French GP played on the Paul-Ricard circuit (Var). By having the latest developments on the engine, Daniel Ricciardo took 8th position on the grid, a few tenths behind McLaren de Lando Norris et Carlos Sainz Jr and Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari). Nico Hulkenberg had more difficulty by failing to rank 13th in Q2 after trying to qualify with the medium tires.

“The result is good for Ricciardo, but we are not satisfied to finish behind the McLarens. We tried to qualify with the medium tires in Q3, but it wasn't enough.", confided the director of Renault F1 Cyril Abiteboul on Canal +.

" I agree with that, added Daniel Ricciardo. I'm happy with my performance because I don't think we were able to beat the McLarens who were almost able to beat the two Red Bull. It's not satisfying to see them in front of us, but this track is special and we will have to see if we can reverse this trend in Austria. We still would have liked to at least be closer to them. »
