French F1 Grand Prix – The tricard role

What is the real place of the Grand Prix du Castellet in the world of F1, and what is that of France on the Liberty Media chessboard? These questions deserve to be asked as the newly leaked 2022 calendar confirms its status as an extra, not to say stopgap.

French F1 Grand Prix – The tricard role

Last year, in an emergency, the French Grand Prix was forced to bring forward its running by a week to the great contempt of spectators to make room for a second “Grand Prix Red Bull » even though the Var promoter had offered to host a second event. This year, because Silverstone wanted an earlier date to avoid finding itself in competition with the final of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, the FOM allocated it the date (July 3) normally allocated to Paul-Ricard without worrying that a delay to July 24, in the middle of the summer season, would further increase mobility problems and transform hotel reservations into a headache. In any case, France has been just "tolerated" in the world of F1 for a long time and all the efforts of Paul Ricard's team won't change much. Too bad. We will still have some great races in other disciplines to enjoy the circuit.

What is missing from the French GP? More than spectators, supporters, more than 50? I doubt it very much. A circuit with a layout worthy of the name so that during the race NOTHING happens. While I'm at it, for the sake of image, replace this vile sculpture and its replicas offered on the podium. As for ease of circulation it seems better but with more than 000 entries it will still be a problem but not worse than Silverstone (it seems) or Magny-Cours (50h000 to go 1 m and get out of the car park!!!)
