Grosjean: “It’s a game of poker”

Romain Grosjean don't be idle. The pilot Haas is heavily relied upon by his team to carry out the winter tests in Barcelona (Spain). The Frenchman notably achieved the fifth best time on Wednesday February 27 in 1’18”330.

The progress of this day was disrupted by a minor problem. " We met a little problem with the position of the pedals at the start of the day, which delayed our first outing by an hour instead of 10 minutes. After that, everything went well.”, He explains.

The progress observed on his mount is positive according to him. “ We encountered different track conditions, with cool temperatures in the morning, then heat during the day, the wind picked up too. This is important because the new aero rules can have an effect on this plan, compared to the past. The car responds very well. We are moving in the right direction. »

The key point of these 2019 tests is the redesign of the front and rear wings. “I'm not a fan of wide front wings. We can't even take 300 in the straight anymore. A snow plow in the front! »

“The front wings are wider, the rear wings are bigger so the load capacity is increased. It's more complicated to control the flow around the car, there will be quite a few changes to the cars during the season. I tested a few in the simulator and they worked well.", specifies the Habs.

Obviously, Romain Grosjean wants to be optimistic but does not hide his face towards the other teams. “ The feeling in the car is very good, better than last year and the previous season. If you listen to everyone, except maybe Mercedes who played the honesty card: everyone is going to be world champion at the end of the year. Everyone has a great car. It's a poker game. »

Therefore, it is not very useful to spy on the competition. “We have our strategist who will tell us all the things but Personally, I don't care. The feelings are more important. Feel good on the car. What's the point of knowing if they're faster or slower than us? We'll find out soon enough in qualifying. »

The old pilot Renault and Lotus warns the fans. There shouldn't be much spectacle at the season opener in Melbourne (Australia, March 17), where Haas is planning a new front wing. “We have an evolution for Melbourne, from memory, I think it’s a front wing. I tried it in the simulator, it wasn't bad. Let's not react quickly in the wake of this GP. There won't be many overruns », due to the urban nature of the track and the low opportunities for attacks.

Melbourne nevertheless risks being a great opportunity to play spoilsport. “At the start, the gap with the three big teams (Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull) will perhaps be reduced but once the factory team infrastructures are running at full capacity, they will move away again. »
