F1 2022 Guide – Technical regulations: A breath of fresh air?

Less restrictive than initially feared and very focused on aerodynamics, the new technical charter has the primary mission of ridding the single-seaters of the turbulence which prevented them from following each other. With their complex fins and other side deflectors improving their aerodynamic behavior, the cars cut through the air. The only problem was that they also made it dirty for the cars that followed them. The latter could lose up to 50% of support under the effect of this turbulence; which made neither overtaking nor big fights easier. It is this observation, as implacable as it is mathematical, which prompted Ross Brawn, technical and sporting director of the F1, to form a working group around Pat Symonds (FOM technical manager), Jason Somerville (FOM aero manager, then FIA) and Nikolas Tombazis (FOM manager). car FIA), des ingénieurs ayant fait les beaux jours de la discipline avant de se ranger du côté du législateur.
