Haas with two aerodynamic solutions in Germany

Haas refuses to recognize it, but the American team no longer knows which way to turn. In addition to the poor results of its drivers (double retirement in Great Britain), the team is struggling in terms of aerodynamics. In Germany (July 26-28), Romain Grosjean et Kevin Magnussen will have two different packages.

The Frenchman will continue to ride with the elements dating from the opening of the 2019 season in Australia, while all new parts will arrive on the car from the Dane. “We were not sure that the development brought to Barcelona (Spain) was better than the initial version, comments Günther Steiner, Team Principal of Haas.

As you know, we have not collected a lot of data in England. We are therefore keeping this strategy for Hockenheim, which is a different track from Silverstone, with different and much higher temperatures. »

The objective is to evaluate the relevance of these two packages and to choose the most efficient solution for the end of the season. “From a tuning point of view, it’s not a big problem, assures the Italian. Each pilot has a dedicated team of engineers. What adds work is the collection and comparison of data by the team at the factory. »

Romain Grosjean therefore knows his equipment well. “When we had the evolution in Catalonia, I didn't feel comfortable with the rear axle, especially in the medium and high speed corners, explains the Frenchman. The sensations have not improved since then, whereas with the Melbourne package, the car reacted better. »

And too bad if this spring package isn't perfect. “It has less downforce, but it has better stability. » Ultimately, Haas' goal is to make better use of Pirelli tires. “This is the best improvement we can make at the moment.” concludes Günther Steiner.

Haas remains stuck in ninth and penultimate place in the Constructors' Championship and has not scored a point since Monaco in May, i.e. four consecutive races outside the top 10.
