Hakkinen: “Schumi must step down”

The German?s season did not end in the best way. Mika Hakkinen gave his opinion very clearly regarding the return of the seven-time World Champion in F1. The former pilot McLaren does not understand the relentlessness of Michael Schumacher to persist in this discipline, even though he has never been able to claim a single victory this season.

« Michael is for me an old bygone glory », Wrote Mika Häkkinen in a column in the Munich newspaper TZ. " I wondered why he returned to a cockpit. He is the most successful driver in motorsport who is now riding in the peloton and who makes a ridiculous mistake in Abu Dhabi almost costing him his life. What a tragedy it would have been for the Germans, on the day of the triumph of Sebastian Vettel. »

« What does the man who has won more than anyone else have left to prove? », asks the Finn. “ From my point of view, he is gradually destroying his legend. Whether it's because of technical problems or because he can no longer stand up to the young drivers makes no difference to me. »

Mika Häkkinen nevertheless understands the desire of the former pilot Ferrari to return to the competition, the Finn having himself continued his career in DTM from 2005 to 2007. After three years, I myself decided to return to a cockpit, with Mercedes in DTM », concedes the double World Champion. “ And I must admit that even for an F1 Champion, the others don't do you any favors? I only won three races (in this Championship). »

The Finn ends with a final dig addressed to Michael Schumacher. “ Personally, we will never be close friends because he always seemed to me to be a little too arrogant. »
