It was a complicated Saturday for Lewis Hamilton. In the wall at turn 5 at the end of Free Practice 3, the seven-time world champion struggled for a long time not to be eliminated in Q1 in the afternoon. Once again close to the exit in Q2, the Briton finally managed to make it into the last round of qualifying and will start 6th on the starting grid for the Monaco Grand Prix this Sunday (start at 15 p.m.).

« It was so difficult, breathes Hamilton. I was pushing so hard that I found myself overpiloting. »

« And when you're over-revving, that's the worst place to be because the car isn't doing what you want. But if I just stayed within her limits, we might not be able to get her into the top 10. » Lewis Hamilton thus explains his exit from the track during Free Practice 3.

« I also had to make some adjustments to try to catch up in the intermediate sector, because that's where we lost the most. I fixed that, but the first and last ones got worse. Ultimately I think we need to work on our aerodynamic balance, but the improvements have been good this weekend, so I'm grateful for that. »

For the Briton, the benefits of the improvements made this weekend in Monaco will be more visible during the next round in Barcelona, in a week.

« This is an undeniable improvement, judges the pilot. Next week I think we'll have a better idea of how much the aerodynamics have actually improved, and we have some plans for the future. »

« But there are still fundamental changes we need to make for the future. I'm really grateful for all the work and I'm glad I didn't damage the rear of the car, which is all new parts, when I hit the wall. »

Meet at 15 p.m. for the start of the Monaco Grand Prix, to follow in live text on AUTOhebdo.fr.
