Lewis Hamilton won qualifying for the Canadian GP by winning at the wire ahead of Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton beats Rosberg in qualifying

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) won pole at the Canadian Grand Prix, his fifth in Montreal and the 53rd of his career, by setting a time of 1'12''812 on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal with the ultra-soft tires.

The three-time world champion beat his teammate Nico Rosberg by six hundredths. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) took third place a tenth behind. THE Red Bull de Daniel Ricciardo et Max Verstappen complete the top five of the grid.

Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) took sixth place ahead of the Williams de Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa. Nico Hulkenberg (Force India) and Fernando Alonso (McLaren) complete the top ten.

Fernando Alonso (McLaren) is the last driver to qualify for Q3. The double world champion was ahead of Sergio Pérez (Force India) by half a tenth, the first to be eliminated from the second qualifying session.

The Mexican is ahead of Jenson Button (McLaren) and Daniil Kvyat (Toro Rosso) who will have to move back three places on the grid following a penalty inflicted on Monaco. THE Haas by Esteban Gutiérrez and Romain Grosjean bring up the rear with Carlos Sainz Jr (Toro Rosso) who hit the “Wall of Champions” before being able to set a time.

Jolyon Palmer (Renault) failed 15 thousandths from Q2 of the Canadian Grand Prix, finishing in 17th place behind Romain Grosjean (Haas). Pascal Wehrlein (Manor) follows in 18th place ahead of Marcus Ericsson, Felipe Nasr (Sauber) and Rio Haryanto (Manor). Kevin Magnussen (Renault) did not take part in the session following his accident during the last practice session. The Swedish driver will have to move back three places on the grid following a penalty imposed at the Monaco GP.
