Hamilton claims record 90th pole in Budapest

They are disconcertingly easy. Stable in all conditions. And fast. Oh so fast. Dominators since the beginning of the Magyar weekend, the Mercedes confirmed their relentless hegemony in qualifying at the Hungaroring.

Lewis Hamilton signs the 90th pole position of his brilliant career after a record lap on the Hungarian circuit. The six-time world champion completes his final effort in Q3 in 1'13″447 to get ahead of his teammate Valtteri Bottas of 0''107.

Racing Point, with a car heavily inspired by last year's Mercedes, locks the second row. Lance stroll took a good 3rd place and preceded his sidekick Sergio Pérez. The two Pink Panthers, however, emerge about a full second behind the Black Arrows…

A sign of their new status, the Racing Points managed to get into Q3 with medium tires. Only the Mercedes will start the Grand Prix on Sunday with yellow tires.”

Behind, Ferrari confirms the renewed form seen this weekend by taking over the 3rd row, Sebastian Vettel before Charles Leclerc. Unhappy with his Red Bull RB16 since the first free practices, Max Verstappen does what he can to grab the 7th place on the grid. The two follow McLaren de Lando Norris et Carlos Sainz.

Slowed down again by engine problems, Pierre Gasly completes the Top 10 but cannot sign a timed lap during the last phase of qualifying. Renault stops at the gates of Q3 with the 11th fastest time Daniel Ricciardo. His teammate Esteban Ocon cannot do better than 14th position.

Complicated session also for Alexander albon aboard the second Red Bull. The Thai has not felt comfortable since the start of the weekend and has to settle for 13th time in Q2.

The improvement is confirmed at Williams with a double presence in Q2 unthinkable last year. The rain didn't even come to give the FW43s a boost this Saturday. George Russell took 12th time, while Nicholas latifi ranks 15th.

Earlier in this qualifying session, Q1 proved fatal to the Haas de Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grojean as well as Alfa Romeo by Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Räikkönen. Daniil Kvyat (Alpha Tauri) had accompanied them in this first cart.

On Sunday, Hamilton will try to grab an 8th victory at the Hungaroring. This would allow him to equal another record of Michael Schumacher : the number of successes on the same circuit. Apart from his teammate Bottas, we don't really see who can compete with the pole sitter of the day.
