Lewis Hamilton scored his ninth pole of the season at the Malaysian GP. Sebastian Vettel encountered a turbo problem in Q1.

Hamilton on pole in Malaysia, Vettel last

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) scored his ninth pole of the season, the 70th of his career, at the Malaysian GP in Sepang with a lap record set at 1:30. The leader of the Championship had success since Kimi Räikkönen (Ferrari) failed by only 45 thousandths and will complete the first line.

Lewis Hamilton can especially rejoice in the misfortunes of his title rival Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari). The German was eliminated in Q1 after encountering a turbo problem following a Power Unit change following an electrical problem at the end of FP3. The German will start from the last row.

The Red Bull de Max Verstappen et Daniel Ricciardo are second in line in front Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes). Esteban Ocon (Force India) completes the third row while his teammate Sergio Pérez fails behind Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren) and Nico Hulkenberg (Renault). Fernando Alonso (McLaren) completes the top ten.

Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso) was unable to go further than Q2. The Toro Rosso driver set the final time of the session more than a tenth behind his teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. Williams are also eliminated, Felipe Massa having failed two hundredths behind Fernando Alonso (McLaren) while Lance stroll is in 13th place behind Jolyon Palmer (Renault).

The Haas de Romain Grosjean et Kevin Magnussen were the first eliminated in Q1, the Frenchman having failed by less than three tenths against Fernando Alonso (McLaren). The VF17s preceded the Saubers of Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson.

The start of the Malaysian GP will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. The race will be followed live on Canal+ and with our live text.
