Hamilton: “The accident reminds us that this sport is dangerous”

The Grand Prix started with drama, but ended like many others, with a victory of Lewis Hamilton. The Briton won his eleventh victory of the season, his 95th career. It almost took second place, as the accident of Romain Grosjean made an impression. “It was shocking to see” reacted Lewis Hamilton.

“When I get in the car I know I'm taking a risk and I respect the dangerous aspect of this sport. But today was really horrible. I don't know what's left of the car but I'm glad the halo and barriers worked, he could have cut his head off. There Formula 1 has made an incredible effort in recent years investing in security. But today's episode reminds us how dangerous this sport is, that we are always at the limit. »

Once the Grand Prix started again, the main challenge was to maintain concentration. “With the break we had after the accident we had to get back into action, but it is very easy to get out of the zone in which we are concentrated” commented the Briton.

The pilot Mercedes also insisted on the requirement of the route. “This track is physically very tough, there are a lot of fast turns, you really feel them at the end.”

A difficult race mentally and physically, but calm in terms of driving. Hamilton never had to defend after starting from pole. “Max wasn't far behind, I tried to respond to his fast laps when necessary. But I didn't know how it was going to end. We were very good on strategy. »

His teammate Valtteri Bottas was much less successful. Hit during the start, he had to quickly pit, which relegated him to the back of the pack. Eighth in the end, he remains under threat of Max Verstappen for second place in the championship.
