Hamilton: F1 must return to Africa

While the pilots Mercedes are preparing to start the 2020 season, Lewis Hamilton was invited to express his views on potential locations to host the F1 in the future. The six-time world champion believes, beyond sport, that the championship must bring a social dimension to populations.

“It’s simple, (you have to go to) Africa. It is a very important place that must return, explained the Briton in a video published by Petronas, the title sponsor of Mercedes F1. At the moment, F1 travels from country to country leaving little behind. F1 needs to become a sport that moves, leaving something that can really help communities. »

“I think the focus needs to go back to Africa first and show the beautiful places there. It is a very important place, added the Mercedes driver. It should not be based only on money but also on people. This isn't always the case in business, but it's something I strive for. »

In the current context, Lewis Hamilton has already spoken out on several occasions to campaign against social inequalities.

“My biggest goal is not necessarily the championship. This is not a normal year and we can consider this moment to be an opportunity to change things. By running, I can represent those who feel they are not heard. I will do my best to participate in change”, he said.

F1 has occurred in Africa 24 times in its history, with the Moroccan GP in 1958 and 23 editions of the South African GP between 1962 and 1993.
