If the Briton has already achieved benchmark times this season, he has not been at such a celebration in recent weeks. Of course, free practice is often used by teams to test single-seaters, and not to seek the ultimate time. But, in this context, the time toHamilton can comfort McLaren in its work to reduce the gap with the leading teams (Brawn GP, Red Bull). It is also a car from the Red Bull team which occupies second place, namely Sebastian Vettel, winner of the last GP, at Silverstone, and who races on the Nürburgring in front of his audience.
Embarrassed in the morning, Sebastian Vettel this time quickly left the pits to perform a few reconnaissance laps and, in the process, set a reference time. Heikki Kovalainen (McLaren) then took over (1:33:724), before Nick Heidfeld (1:33:012) showed that the BMWs had also progressed. Mark Webber, by far the fastest in the morning, then improved the best time twice (1:32:584, then Jenson Button remembered the good memories of the paddock (1:32:369). Vettel then stood out again, thinking he would set a time that would put him at the top of the basket (1:32:342). But Lewis Hamilton then showed off the speed of his McLaren -Mercedes (1?32??149), a performance that will need to be achieved in qualifying. Because, if Hamilton is the fastest this Friday, he is especially used to failing on Saturday in Q1, as in the last three Grands Prix.
