While the presentations of F1 2023 is starting to come together, the FIA is already preparing the new engine era of F1, the one which will begin in 2026.
The Federation published this Friday, February 3, the list of six engine manufacturers who have registered for the period 2026-2030. A list in which logically appear Mercedes, Alpine, Ferrari, Audi (which will team up with Sauber), Red Bull Ford, whose partnership was formalized this Friday in New York, but also… Honda!
Officially, the Japanese manufacturer withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of 2021 but according to the FIA it would like to return. With whom ? Not Red Bull obviously since the Austrian team which bought Japanese intellectual property to found its “Red Bull Powertrains” department has just joined forces with Ford for this new cycle.
Would the Sakura brand (Japan) consider engaging with a potential 11e team or get another one already present?
« The confirmation that there will be six engine manufacturers competing in Formula 1 from 2026 is testament to the strength of the championship and the robust technical regulations which have been diligently developed by the FIA in close collaboration with Formula 1 and the groupset manufacturers powertrains, rejoices Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the FIA.
The power unit is at the forefront of technological innovation and makes the future of Formula 1 more sustainable while maintaining spectacular racing. I am grateful for the confidence shown by major car manufacturers around the world, demonstrated by their commitment to Formula 1. »
Dans cette liste, on notera toutefois un absent de taille : Porsche, qui devait s’associer à Red Bull l’été dernier et fut récemment annoncé du côté de Williams. Has the Stuttgart brand given up on F1? Time will tell.
The objectives of the new engine regulations:
– Maintaining the show: The 2026 power unit will have similar performance to current models, using high-power, high-revving V6 internal combustion engines and avoiding excessive performance differentiation (between teams) to enable greater suitability. the competition.
– Environmental sustainability : Power Unit 2026 will include an increase in the deployment of electric power by up to 50% and will use 100% sustainable fuel.
– Financial viability: Powertrain financial regulations will reduce overall costs for competitors while retaining the cutting-edge technology showcase that is at the heart of Formula 1.
– Attractiveness for new engine manufacturers: the regulations are intended to make it possible for new manufacturers to join the sport at a competitive level.
