Horner: Rules changed easily against Red Bull

Christian Horner once again highlighted the lack of power of the 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6 Renault Sport F1 facing the Power Unit developed by Mercedes. Viruses-Châtillon may well have placed the stable of Milton Keynes in a favorite position compared to its other customers and working hard to close the gap on the engine of Brixworth, the Red Bull Team Principal speaks of a very significant performance gap. “Our engine develops 75hp less than that of Mercedes. We are still the fastest in the corners, but unfortunately we don't have enough power. It doesn’t matter what you have with 75hp less, there’s nothing you can do.”, commented the Briton in Autosprint.

The director of Red Bull Racing fears a similar situation next year. The gap could even evolve further knowing that the Losange has lost at least one customer team (Lotus F1 Team which will move to Mercedes from 2015), with the future of Caterham F1 Team in suspense. The main problem lies in the freeze on engine development introduced next year in order to limit costs. “Ihopes that Renault will be able to reduce the delay, but it will not be easy because the problems we are encountering will be very difficult to resolve if we freeze this new technology so quickly. In the past, always with the aim of slowing down Red Bull, it posed no problem to modify the technical regulations when we had the double diffuser, the blown diffusers, the flexible elements or the engine maps., recalled Christian Horner.
