Horner: Renault should have favored Red Bull

Christian Horner believes that the delay in development of Renault's Power Unit comes partly from Losange's desire to treat its customer teams in the same way.

Horner: Renault should have favored Red Bull

At the end of the Austrian Grand Prix where the Red Bull of Sebastian Vettel was once again the victim of a mechanical failure (on the ECU), Christian Horner stepped up to the plate and expressed his frustration with the lack of reliability and performance of the Power Unit of Renault. If the Team Principal of Milton Keynes remember the exploits accomplished with Viruses-Châtillon and that he is aware of the efforts made, the Briton still indicated that the situation was “unacceptable”.

This new episode in the 6l turbo/hybrid V1.6 saga is accompanied by speculation regarding a breach of contract between Red Bull and Renault. If the big boss Dietrich Mateschitz has made it known that there is no question of developing his own engine, other solutions exist. “A team like Red Bull always has different options and I’m not going to reveal them here.”, commented Christian Horner, reported by ESPNF1.com. “We want to race at the front, we want to be competitive, and we need to have an effective Power Unit for that. »

If a return to form seems complicated this year, Red Bull can count on the knowledge of Renault Sport F1 to redress the situation. However, Christian Horner criticizes the French engine manufacturer's approach to the new regulations where the Losange would have chosen to treat each customer team in the same way. “I think that could be an element that would explain this because you can never satisfy everyone. If you look at the engine Ferrari, it was developed for Ferrari single-seaters. Customers must adapt their cars and this is also the case at Mercedes. Renault has tried to make all its customers happy, which is an admirable thing, by treating them equally, but that is not the right way to be competitive. We must do everything to get out of this situation and for the moment we must support Renault in order to better exploit the Power Unit. »
