Hülkenberg admits he no longer has his destiny completely in his hands

Nico Hulkenberg will he always be F1 next season? Pilot's name Renault, pushed towards the exit after the return ofEsteban Ocon as holder, figured very well on the short-list of Haas but the American team finally chose to keep Romain Grosjean. A decision which leaves no bitterness for the German.

« I'm not disappointed because we didn't reach an agreement with Haas, responded Hülkenberg from Singapore. This was clearly an option and we had discussions but could not find common ground ».

Asked if Alfa Romeo now represented his best chance to make the grid in 2020, the former winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans admits that he no longer has complete control of the situation.

« You can see for yourself which seats are still available on the grid, replied Hulkenberg. At the moment, I don't know anything about it. To a certain extent it is beyond my control, I no longer have control.

The only thing I can do is be present on the track. We will take the time to analyze the situation because there are realistic opportunities and chances but in this game you are never sure of anything ».

With a view to a return to Hinwil, where Hülkenberg defended the Sauber colors in 2013, the German could rely on the support of his former boss in promotion formulas Frédéric Vasseur since the French manager still has him in high esteem.

« Fred and I have known each other for a long time; he's the person who brought me to F1 so it doesn't hurt, that's for sure ", added the former Force India driver.

However, the higher interest risks prevailing on the Italian side, Alfa and the parent company. Ferrari tipping the scales towards Antonio Giovinazzi.

Would then remain Williams, where Robert Kubica has just announced his departure and where Hülkenberg began his career in 2010. The Renault racer said the Pole's decision was too fresh to react while clarifying that he would not seek to stay in F1 at all costs.

« I really want to continue in F1 but it has to make sense, he said. I'm not ready for everything. This isn't a disrespect to Williams, it's a more general statement. This is the most important in my eyes. The dream and the inner fire are still there ».
